DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES (EVS)
The Government College of Education, Jammu has contributed a lot and played a vital role in shaping the future of prospective teachers and Department of EVS has proved to be one of the important components since 2004, as the subject got introduced at College level in the same year. Environmental Studies is one of the important branches of Environmental Sciences which focuses on the interaction between human and natural systems and the connection between Science and Policy. In two years B.Ed and M.Ed courses, Environmental Studies encompasses courses like Environmental Education and Disaster Management. Environmental Education is a process rather than content by which people develop awareness, concern and knowledge of the environment and learn how to use this understanding and skill to safeguard the environment and solve environmental issues.
Disaster Management includes courses of action, routines, laws and policies to aid in the conservation and recovery of lives and property during a natural or man induced disaster.

OBJECTIVES
To make the student teachers understand about the concept, importance and scope of Environment Education.
To acquaint pupil teachers with various components of Environment for developing curriculum for Environmental education.
To help pupil teachers acquire an awareness of and sensitivity to the total environment and its allied problems.
To build up a sense of responsibility towards conservation of environment and sustainable development.
To familiarize prospective teachers to acquire the skills for identifying and solving environmental problems and the motivation for actively participating in environmental improvement and protection.
To enable future teachers to have basic conceptual understanding of disasters and to understand the relationship between vulnerability, disaster, disaster prevention and risk reduction.
To induce knowledge to create appropriate planning, preparation and response for emergency treatment in disaster situation.
To develop skills in response to disasters.
ACHIEVEMENTS/ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN
A small vertical garden has been set up by the department.
Colored dustbins have been installed in the campus for proper waste segregation.
Roof top rain water harvesting unit is installed in the campus.
Sanitary napkin vending and incinerator machine installation is also done in the Girls toilet complex.
Various banners and flexes regarding polythene ban and say no to single use plastics are installed at various places in the campus.
Plantation drives are carried on from time to time.
Various days and Events of Environmental importance such as Wetland Day, Earth day, Ozone Day, Environment Day, Water day etc. are celebrated from time to time.
Solar panels are also installed.
Various steps to conserve energy, waste management, Bio-Diversity Conservation etc. are taken from time to time.
