Department of Environmental Studies (EVS)
The Government College of Education, Jammu has contributed significantly to shaping the future of prospective teachers.
The Department of Environmental Studies has been an important component since 2004, the year the subject was introduced at the college level.
Environmental Studies is a key branch of Environmental Sciences focusing on the interaction between human and natural systems and the connection between science and policy.
In the two-year B.Ed and M.Ed courses, Environmental Studies includes subjects such as Environmental Education and Disaster Management.
Environmental Education is a process through which people develop awareness, concern, and knowledge of the environment, learning to safeguard it and solve environmental issues.
Disaster Management covers courses of action, routines, laws, and policies to aid in the conservation and recovery of lives and property during natural or man-made disasters.

Objectives
- To make student teachers understand the concept, importance, and scope of Environmental Education.
- To acquaint pupil teachers with various components of the environment for developing Environmental Education curriculum.
- To help pupil teachers acquire awareness and sensitivity towards the environment and related problems.
- To build a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation and sustainable development.
- To familiarize prospective teachers with skills for identifying and solving environmental problems, and motivate active participation in environmental improvement and protection.
- To provide basic understanding of disasters, vulnerability, prevention, and risk reduction.
- To create knowledge for planning, preparation, and response in emergency situations.
- To develop skills for responding effectively to disasters.
Achievements & Activities Undertaken
- A small vertical garden has been set up by the department.
- Colored dustbins have been installed for proper waste segregation.
- Rooftop rainwater harvesting unit installed in the campus.
- Sanitary napkin vending and incinerator machines installed in the girls’ toilet complex.
- Banners and flexes promoting polythene ban and single-use plastic reduction installed across campus.
- Plantation drives conducted periodically.
- Celebration of environmental days such as Wetland Day, Earth Day, Ozone Day, Environment Day, and Water Day.
- Solar panels installed for renewable energy use.
- Various initiatives for energy conservation, waste management, and biodiversity conservation.
